The memoirs of the Latvian film critic Valentīna Freimane “Ardievu, Atlantīda!” have just been published in Germany by Wallstein Verlag. Matthias Knoll’s translation titled “Adieu, Atlantis” has already received positive reviews in Frankfurter Allgemeine Zeitung and ZDF Aspekte.
Ms. Freimane’s touching portrait of the pre-war world of European film stars and her personal tribulations during World War II won her considerable acclaim in Latvia when the book was first published in 2010. In December 2014 an opera based on the author’s life (with libretto written by Liāna Langa and Arturs Maskats) was first performed in the Latvian National Opera. On May 19th there will be a guest performance of the opera in Deutsche Oper, Berlin.
There’s an extensive video interview available with Ms. Freimane on ZDF website: www.zdf.de/…/…/video/2350854/Valentina-Freimane-im-Interview, and the German publisher has put a preview of the first 14 pages online: http://issuu.com/wallstein/docs/leseprobe_freimane. The book itself can be ordered from the Wallstein Verlag website: http://www.wallstein-verlag.de/9783835316034-valentina-frei…
